An intensive English course concentrates more training into a shorter period, with several hours of private one-to-one training each day, usually over one or more consecutive weeks. Unlike a standard course – where lessons are spread across months – an intensive program keeps you fully immersed in English for extended periods, which produces faster, more durable progress.
People come to intensive training for different reasons. Some have a deadline – a new job, an international move, an important presentation. Some have been using English for years but know it isn't working as well as it should: they hesitate under pressure, fall back on the same limited phrases, or feel their English doesn't reflect what they actually know. Others simply want to make concentrated progress in a short period rather than spread improvement across many months.
At The English Center, we offer two intensive courses: Intensive English and Intensive Business English. Both courses are private, one-to-one, and fully customized. The right choice depends on your goals and the situations you need to prepare for.
Your intake appointment is with a trainer, not a salesperson.

The Intensive Business English course is for professionals who want to communicate more effectively in a specific workplace context. A program may focus on meetings, presentations, professional writing, negotiations, client conversations, leadership communication, or preparing for interviews and career transitions.
The difference between this course and Intensive English is not level – both suit a wide range of levels. The difference is focus. If your primary goal is professional communication in a defined workplace context, the Intensive Business English course builds the entire program around those situations, using your industry, your vocabulary, and your real professional challenges as the core material.

The Intensive English course is for people who want to develop their English across one or more skill areas – fluency, pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, listening, reading, or writing – whether their goals are personal, professional, or a combination of both.
A program may focus on speaking fluency and natural conversation, pronunciation, rhythm and intonation, grammar accuracy, or listening comprehension. It can also be built around a specific practical goal – including a work-related one – that calls for broad language development rather than a narrow professional focus.
If your needs span more than one area of English, or you want to improve how you communicate across a range of everyday and professional situations, this is the right starting point. The course is built around your current level, your goals, and the situations you actually face – not a fixed syllabus.

If you're unsure, the free intake appointment is the right place to start. An English Center trainer will discuss your goals, assess your current level, and recommend the course that fits your situation. There's no obligation.
Intensive training works because it creates continuity. Instead of leaving several days between sessions, you return to the same language, skills, and communication challenges again and again within a short period. New patterns are practiced while they are still fresh, feedback can be applied immediately, and progress builds from one session to the next.
This concentrated practice is especially valuable for intermediate and advanced learners. At this level, the problem is often not a lack of English knowledge. You may already know the vocabulary, grammar, or phrases you need, but still struggle to access them quickly and naturally when you are speaking, responding under pressure, or trying to follow a fast-moving conversation.
Intensive practice helps turn knowledge into more automatic performance. Repetition, immediate feedback, and repeated opportunities to try again make it easier to retrieve language without having to stop and think about every word or sentence.
The format also gives your trainer a much clearer picture of how you communicate. When you work together for several hours over consecutive days, recurring patterns become easier to identify: where you hesitate, which errors keep returning, what happens when you are under pressure, and which changes make the biggest difference. Your trainer can then adjust the program quickly and reinforce improvements while they are still developing.
The result is not simply more English in less time. It is a concentrated period of practice, feedback, and adjustment designed to help you communicate more effectively and more automatically.

Every intensive course at The English Center is private, one-to-one, and built around the individual. Before training begins, your trainer will discuss your current level, goals, timeline, and where you need to use English. That becomes the basis of your program.
There is no fixed syllabus and no standard set of materials to work through. You focus on the English you actually need: perhaps presenting to stakeholders, contributing more confidently in meetings, improving pronunciation and fluency, preparing for an interview, or communicating more naturally in everyday life.
Because you work closely with one experienced native-speaker trainer, the program can evolve as you progress. Your trainer sees where communication becomes difficult, which patterns keep recurring, and which changes make the biggest difference. The focus, pace, materials, and type of feedback can then be adjusted from one session to the next.
This makes the training highly responsive. You practice, receive immediate feedback, try again, and apply what you are learning in realistic communication. Time is spent on the areas that will make the greatest difference to how you use English.
The aim is not to complete a syllabus. It is to help you use English more effectively, confidently, and naturally when it matters.
You can follow intensive training at one of our locations, online, or as a combination of both.
If you're based in or visiting Amsterdam, our Summer English Intensive Course offers one, two, or three-week private intensive programs in the Museum Quarter. Training takes place in the morning, and the rest of the day is yours – in a city where English is spoken widely, giving you natural practice well beyond the session itself.
Year-round intensive training is available at the following locations:
Since 2009, professionals throughout the Netherlands have trusted The English Center for private, fully customized English training.
Intensive training works best when feedback is immediate, consistent, and tied directly to the way you actually communicate, not to a general course outline. At The English Center, every session is built around active communication. You speak, listen, respond, and practice the situations you actually find difficult, while your trainer observes in real time, coaches on the spot, and tracks the specific patterns that are holding you back.
Over the course of an intensive program, retrieval becomes faster, recurring errors become fewer, and communicating in English under pressure becomes more natural. The goal is not simply to know more. It is to perform better in the situations where it counts.
Every intensive program is taught by an experienced native-speaker trainer and built entirely around your goals. No fixed curriculum. No generic materials. No group dynamic slowing you down.
