Let me start by saying I am a longtime cat lover. This playful post was inspired by two things: Our English Center cat, who looks exactly like Mr.Milothechonk @ Instagram (don’t you agree?) – and lyrics from The Kiffness’s viral hit, “They’re eating the dogs… they’re eating the cats…” Honestly, it’s an earworm (a song you can’t get out of your head).

Have you heard the “Eating the Cats?” Seen the video? No? Well, don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. Enjoy @TheKiffness’s purrfect song: “Eating the Cats” in the player below. This video has topped 10 million views on YouTube in a matter of weeks.
The lyrics: “They’re eating the dogs, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa; they’re eating the cats, meow, meow, meow meow, they’re eating the pets of the people who live there….” is a tongue-in-cheek critique of the absurdity of misinformation and extreme political rhetoric. The song’s playful, satirical nature provides commentary on how certain narratives, often exaggerated or misrepresented, can be used to inflame fear and division, especially those around race and immigration.
David Scott, known by his stage name “The Kiffness,” is a South African musician, producer, and internet personality famous for his comedic and satirical remixes and parodies. He blends electronic music with quirky humor, often incorporating viral internet content or collaborations with animals in his music videos.
The Kiffness first gained widespread attention during the COVID-19 pandemic, with catchy remixes of popular memes and viral animal sounds, creating a unique niche in the music world. With a sincere, subdied style, dry wit, musical talent, and social commentary, Scott has built a loyal fanbase.
In 2015, Scott released “They’re Eating The Dogs,” inspired by a viral moment from a news interview featuring a South African politician. During a parliamentary protest, this politician made a statement about people “eating the dogs,” which Scott cleverly turned into a catchy and humorous track. The song used repetition and humor to highlight the absurdity of the statement, while also providing commentary on the political climate in South Africa.
Recently, the track found new life in an unexpected American context as a popular post for Kamala Harris’s campaign. The song’s satirical tone, with its underlying political commentary, resonates with the playful but sharp messaging style often seen in U.S. political campaigns. Yes, it’s the purrfect choice for Harris’s team to powerfully engage with social media savvy audiences.
As a result of claims from Trump social media influencers, JD Vance and Trump himself, the city of Springfield Ohio came under threat by some who believed the falsehood. They believed that illegal Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio were abducting and eating pets.
As the saying goes, “A lie can go halfway around the world before the truth has a chance to get its pants on.” (Winston Churchill)

I feel like The Kiffness’s song fits both categories of “literary devices,” but I’ve included some simple definitions below so you can draw your own conclusions.
Parody happens when you take something serious, like a famous book or movie, and make a funny version of it. You’re imitating the style or the way it’s written, but with a twist—usually to make people laugh. It’s kind of like a playful copycat. Think of it like doing a goofy impression of something.
Satire, on the other hand, is a bit sharper. It’s when you use humor to make fun of something, but the goal is often to point out problems or criticize things, like politics or society. It’s funny, but there’s usually a deeper message behind it. You’re joking, but you want people to think about it seriously.
In short, parody is more about having fun, while satire tries to make a point while still being funny.
Moving on, and moving back in time, here’s one more cat-themed song from the way back machine: This song is neither satire or parody, but it does blur the lines between people and cats. Is it the cat or the people who are “strutting” around? Or both?
“Stray Cat Strut” (1981) by the Stray Cats, is a rockabilly hit with an early MTV video about a street-smart cat living carefree and embodying independence and rebellion.

What is a trope?
A trope is a commonly recurring theme, concept, or device in storytelling across literature, film, TV, and other media. Tropes help convey ideas quickly by using recognizable patterns, such as the “reluctant hero” or the “happy housewife.” They often rely on sexist or racist clichés.
Cat tropes go viral in 2024 with “Childless cat ladies“
This vintage sexist trope (closely related to “crazy cat ladies”) has recently resurfaced in American politics and is used pejoratively (=critically) to describe women who remain single or childless by choice, sometimes accompanied by stereotypes of loneliness, eccentricity or downright insanity.
Political figures like JD Vance have invoked this trope to criticize modern societal values, suggesting that the decline in marriage and family structures is linked to a broader cultural shift away from traditional norms. Donald Trump has occasionally echoed similar sentiments, framing childlessness as a sign of moral or cultural decay.
Thankfully, public figures like Taylor Swift challenge this stereotype, embracing independence and success without clinging to conventional family and gender roles. Swift, often seen as an icon of female empowerment, represents a counter-narrative to Vance, celebrating individual choice and challenging outdated labels.
Finally, let’s move onto the cat idioms. Some you will already know, but some will be new.
1. Let the cat out of the bag – To reveal a secret, often by accident.
2. Curiosity killed the cat – Being too curious can get you into trouble.
3. Cat got your tongue? – Asked when someone is unusually quiet or not responding.
4. Raining cats and dogs – It’s raining very heavily.
5. Like a cat on a hot tin roof – To be anxious or restless.
6. There’s more than one way to skin a cat – There are multiple ways to achieve something.
7. The cat’s meow – Something or someone considered outstanding or excellent.
8. Look what the cat dragged in – Used humorously to refer to someone’s disheveled appearance or unexpected arrival.
9. Fight like cats and dogs – To argue or fight intensely.
10. Cat nap – A short, light sleep.
11. Playing cat and mouse – Engaging in a game of pursuit or teasing, often to gain an advantage.
12. A fat cat – A wealthy or influential person.
13. Put the cat among the pigeons – To do something that causes trouble or disturbance.
14. Scaredy-cat – Someone who is easily frightened.
15. Cool cat – Someone who is stylish, confident, and relaxed.
16. Like herding cats – Trying to control or organize a chaotic group or situation.
17. Not enough room to swing a cat – Describes a very small or confined space.
18. Grinning like a Cheshire cat – Smiling broadly, often mysteriously or mischievously.
19. Dead catting – A political strategy where a shocking or controversial event is introduced to divert attention from a more damaging issue.
20. Catfishing – Posing as someone else online to deceive, especially in romantic contexts.
21. Crazy cat – A cool person who does things that are outrageous or out of the norm. (somewhat archaic)
22. Cat – a person, usually a man. Usage is similar to the word “dude” or “guy.” (somewhat archaic)

As more and more companies use Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) to short-list applicants, one of the most significant trends in CV writing is a back-to-basics shift to simpler layouts and streamlined information.
So here are some top tips on how to strike the right balance between a clean layout for AI but which also makes your personality stand out from the crowd when read by a human HR professional.
ATS systems often scan CVs for specific keywords relevant to the job. Use industry-specific terminology and action verbs that align with the job you’re applying for. Online scanning tools can help you match your CV with the job description, ensuring you don’t miss any crucial terms.
An ATS-friendly CV is all about clarity. Use standard fonts, bullet points, and clear headings. Avoid complex layouts and graphics that can confuse AI systems.
Kick off your CV with a strong professional summary that captures who you are and what you bring to the table. This brief introduction should highlight what career choices & skills have led to your current situation. Keep it short, maximum 3 sentences.
Focus on contact information, location and online profiles such as LinkedIn. Remove DOB, photos and nationality. If you’re an NL freelancer (ZZP’r), include your KvK number to show you can legally work here.
Instead of simply listing your job duties, focus on your accomplishments. Use quantifiable metrics to illustrate your successes—think percentages, financial amounts, or other impactful figures. For example, “Increased sales by 30% in six months” paints a much clearer picture than “Responsible for sales.”
Highlight any relevant software skills, tools, or platforms you’re proficient in. While technical skills can give you an edge, soft skills like languages, communication, teamwork, and adaptability are equally valuable. Highlight these traits, especially in a world where collaboration and remote work are increasingly common.
Spelling, grammatical errors and longer than 2 sides are never acceptable in a professional CV. Take the time to proofread multiple times and review with your teacher. Having their objective input is also invaluable to ‘selling yourself’ in an authentic way.
By following these English job interview training tips, you’ll be well on your way to creating a CV that not only gets noticed by ATS but also resonates with hiring managers. Here’s to landing that dream job!
Your cover letter is the place to expand on your job roles and responsibilities, not repeat them. It should highlight what makes you stand out from the crowd, why you are a fit for this job and what you can bring to the team. Don’t forget to emphasise key achievements and, if you can, use numbers to quantify previous success in your work. Using bullet points, rather than full sentences, is also a good way to bring focus to your accomplishments.
It’s great to have a template cover letter to use as a starting point. However, a cover letter is not ‘one size fits all’, it needs to be edited for each job. Make sure you take some time to delve into the culture, values and mission of the organisation. Write how you, your goals and your experience align with their principles and objectives. If you can, it’s also a good idea to find and use the name of the hiring manager to start your letter; ‘Dear _____’ is much more personal!
It might sound obvious but, even though this is an easy fix, I still read many cover letters that have not been proofread. Nothing screams unprofessional more than a typo on the first line. Online tools can be a huge help in identifying easily overlooked typos or badly phrased sentences. Getting a second pair of eyes to look at it like those of a family member, friend (or English Teacher!) can also work wonders. Applying for jobs can be lengthy and tiring – we all make small mistakes here and there, so make sure you check!
We all know that interview preparation starts with researching the company and the position you’re applying for. Having knowledge of their mission, values, recent projects, and company culture, as well as your role and responsibilities, not only helps you to tailor your answers but also shows your genuine interest in the organization. And interviewers love that!
But you can take your research a step further. Use it as an opportunity to find key vocabulary related to the job and industry. Make a list of important terms and phrases you believe could come up in the interview and think about how you can incorporate them into your answers. Practice using these words in various sentences and scenarios until you feel comfortable with them. Familiarizing yourself with key vocabulary can help you feel more confident (and look more professional) when discussing your experience and skills.
One of the most powerful tools you have in an interview is your personal stories. Prepare a few key stories that highlight your strengths, challenges you’ve faced (for the dreaded “Tell us about your weaknesses” question), and valuable lessons learned in your career. Keep them concise and relevant to the questions you might be asked. Use specific details to illustrate your points, making them relatable, memorable, and impactful.
Practice telling these stories in a conversational manner. The goal is to integrate them naturally into your responses rather than delivering them as memorized speeches. By being well-prepared, you can adapt your stories to fit different questions, and not be caught off-guard when questions are worded differently to how you expected!
Speaking of being caught off-guard, it’s totally okay to take a moment to gather your thoughts during the interview. If a question takes you by surprise, don’t rush your answer – just take a deep breath and give yourself a little pause. This will help you to relax and give you time to consider your answer. It also demonstrates that you are deliberate in your responses. You might say something like, “That’s a great question; let me think for a moment.” Remember, it’s better to take a moment than to rush and potentially miss the point!
It’s also okay to ask for clarification if you’re unsure about what’s being asked. This demonstrates your engagement and willingness to understand fully before answering. Remember that interviews are a conversation, not an interrogation. By staying calm and adaptable, you’ll find it easier to communicate your skills and experiences effectively.
We all get nervous. We all forget words or stumble over our answers sometimes. We’re only human! But there are tools available to you to help mitigate this. Knowing that it is okay to pause, to slow down, and to breathe is a simple yet effective tool.

For many of us, second language training starts in school with grammar and a workbook. If you were lucky, you also watched English language TV sitcoms, went to the movies, and played English language video games. This combination of academic training and media immersion is a good way to get some solid skills “under your belt.” (=mastered). Of course, job-jargon always comes later, unless you watched “Grey’s Anatomy” and became a doctor ;-).
While these skills are also supported with academic training and media exposure, for many people, the quality of their spoken English is far below the quality of their grammar. We see many clients who struggle with spoken English fluency: from poor pronunciation to confusion about English language “music” (intonation), these clients need to SOUND better, especially at work.
For adults, there is nothing more important for your career than this category. Your colleagues will forgive you the occasional grammar error (they might not even notice it), but if you are a poor communicator, people may avoid you. If you can’t explain or describe what you’re doing and how you’re doing it, you may never get the promotions and respect you deserve. And if you want to take a leadership role, you can be sure that communication is job one.
In 2024, we often hear about the use of AI for everything from writing emails to academic papers. While AI use can range from handy and time-saving to unethical :-/ – you still need to know how to write in English. So don’t “write off” (=disregard) this skill. Find your “voice” in written English. And take note: Writing in a language is a great way to learn and remember vocabulary that you will use when reading, speaking and listening!

An intensive English course (an immersion course) is a fast, effective way to improve your English for any of the reasons above.
Speaking English is truly your “passport to the world,” allowing you to communicate with people from other countries and cultures. ‘Steenkolen Engels’ is niet voor niets een begrip in de Nederlandse taal. Een Nederlander die Engels spreekt, herken je vaak meteen! En hoewel het zeker zijn charme heeft, draagt het niet bij aan je verstaanbaarheid en professionaliteit. Met gerichte accenttraining kunnen we je hierbij helpen. Of het nu gaat om accentloos leren spreken, een Brits accent of Amerikaans Engels leren spreken.

Een accent is een kenmerkend systeem van uitspraak en klanken, meestal op basis van de moedertaal en de geografische, sociale en familiale omgeving van de spreker. Iedereen spreekt met een accent, en iedereen heeft opvattingen over accenten. In de wereld van ESL (English as a Second Language) wordt de term ‘near-native English’ gezien als de hoogste prestatie: de L2-spreker klinkt dan als een native speaker met een geaccepteerd standaardaccent.
Spoken language leren op latere leeftijd is een uitdaging. De meesten van ons leren een tweede taal visueel, in plaats van auditief. Gelukkig verandert dit langzaamaan, maar veel leerlingen absorberen de taal nog steeds door middel van boeken en teksten in plaats van door te luisteren. Dit betekent dat je bezig bent met het ontleden van letters en woorden, in plaats van klanken. Sommige talen hebben een voorspelbare relatie tussen letters en klanken, maar Engels heeft dat helaas vaak niet.
Engelse spelling staat vaak ver af van de uitspraak. Het lijkt soms alsof de taal opzettelijk ingewikkeld is gemaakt om de spreker uit te dagen. Deze inconsistentie tussen spelling en klank maakt het leren van een Brits accent of een Amerikaans accent moeilijker. Het is belangrijk om te accepteren dat Engelse uitspraak vaak niet overeenkomt met de geschreven taal.
Accenttraining draait om het aanleren van nieuwe gewoontes die uiteindelijk automatisch worden. Een ESL-leerder die goed wil spreken en verstaanbaar wil zijn, moet nieuwe gewoontes ontwikkelen die sterker zijn dan de oude gewoontes, zodat deze ook in spontane situaties juist worden toegepast. Spreken is een automatisch proces. Je hersenen moeten zonder vertraging de juiste klank produceren met de juiste bewegingen van je tong, tanden, lippen en keel, precies op het juiste moment – net zoals fietsen of autorijden.
Accenttraining cliënten hebben vaak problemen met ontbrekende klanken, klankvervanging en verwarring over spelling en uitspraak. Andere veelvoorkomende problemen zijn verkeerde intonatie, ontbrekende verbindingen tussen woorden en overmatige uitspraak van lettergrepen die normaal gesproken onuitgesproken blijven, zoals de schwa-klank.
De schwa-klank is de meest voorkomende klank in het Engels, maar wordt vaak verkeerd uitgesproken. Deze neutrale “uh” klank komt voor in veel onbenadrukte lettergrepen en wordt vaak genegeerd door niet-native speakers. Om deze klank goed te oefenen, probeer dan de zin “Up the bluff, Bud runs with the cup of love” te zeggen, waarbij je de schwa-klank consequent toepast, ongeacht de spelling van de woorden.

Accenttraining vereist dat je je huidige fouten identificeert, die fouten isoleert en vervolgens informatie ontvangt over hoe je de klanken correct kunt produceren. Daarnaast is veel oefenmateriaal nodig om nieuwe gewoontes te vormen. De cliënt moet zich committeren aan zelfcorrectie. Je Engels accent verbeteren kan niet in een uurtje per week; het vereist regelmatige herhaling en oefening.
Bij het verbeteren van je Engels accent gaat het vaak om aandacht voor detail. Veel mensen herkennen hun eigen fouten niet of weten niet hoe ze die kunnen verbeteren. Daarom is het belangrijk dat accenttrainers bereid zijn om met eenvoudige oefeningen te werken aan geïsoleerde klanken. In het begin moeten de oefeningen eenvoudig en repetitief zijn, zodat de nieuwe correcte gewoontes sterker worden dan de oude foutieve gewoontes.
Of je nu een Brits accent wilt leren of een Amerikaans accent wilt verbeteren, beide vereisen specifieke aandacht. Brits Engels heeft bijvoorbeeld een andere intonatie en uitspraak van de “r” dan Amerikaans Engels. Het is belangrijk om te weten welke klanken je moet aanpassen om het gewenste accent te bereiken.
Hier zijn enkele praktische tips om je Engels accent te verbeteren:
Het leren van een nieuwe taal verandert je hersenen aanzienlijk. Bij accenttraining worden er nieuwe verbindingen in je brein gevormd, waardoor je geleidelijk steeds vloeiender spreekt. Dit proces van neuroplasticiteit zorgt ervoor dat de nieuwe gewoontes sterker worden naarmate je meer oefent. Uiteindelijk wordt het correct uitspreken van Engelse klanken een automatisch proces.
Een van de grootste uitdagingen bij het verbeteren van je Engels accent is het trainen van je gehoor om de juiste klanken te herkennen. Vaak zijn we gewend om klanken uit onze moedertaal te gebruiken, wat ons gehoor vertroebelt. Door regelmatig te luisteren naar native speakers en bewust te oefenen met de juiste klanken, kun je je auditieve vaardigheden verbeteren en een meer natuurlijk Engels accent ontwikkelen.
Nee, er is niet één “correct” Engels accent. In de wereld van ESL (Engels als tweede taal) worden accenten vaak onderverdeeld in twee grote categorieën: AE (Amerikaans Engels) en BE (Brits Engels). Maar er zijn veel meer soorten Engelse accenten, zowel nationaal als regionaal.
In Engeland zijn er bijvoorbeeld meer dan 30 dialecten, zoals RP (Received Pronunciation), BBC English, Posh, Estuary, Cockney, Geordie en Yorkshire, om er maar een paar te noemen.
In Noord-Amerika zijn er standaard AE, Canadees Engels, Zuidelijk Amerikaans Engels, New Jersey Engels, New York Engels (elke wijk heeft zijn eigen klank), Boston Engels, Valley Girl Engels, Mid-Atlantic Engels, en Texaans Engels, om maar enkele voorbeelden te geven.
En dan zijn er natuurlijk nog Australisch Engels, Nieuw-Zeelands Engels, Iers Engels, Schots Engels, Welsh Engels, Zuid-Afrikaans Engels… de lijst is eindeloos.
Wil je je Engels accent verbeteren? Hier zijn enkele praktische tips:
Als docent kun je je leerlingen helpen hun Engels accent te verbeteren door:
Het leren van een tweede taal, zoals Engels, is een bijzonder proces dat nieuwe verbindingen in de hersenen creëert. In het geval van accenttraining vertellen deze nieuw getrainde hersenen je articulatoren precies wat ze moeten doen. Voor de taalliefhebbers: je articulatoren zijn onder andere je tong, lippen, tanden, het verhemelte, de huig, de farynxwand en de stembanden.
Om je Engels accent effectief te verbeteren, moet je regelmatig oefenen en bewust bezig zijn met het corrigeren van je uitspraak. Het is belangrijk om geduldig te zijn en je niet te laten ontmoedigen door tegenslagen. Door consistent te oefenen en te werken aan de details van je uitspraak, zul je uiteindelijk merken dat je vanzelf vloeiender en duidelijker spreekt.
Hoewel zelfstudie waardevol is, kan professionele begeleiding je helpen om sneller vooruitgang te boeken. Voor veel sprekers hoeft het doel niet “near-native Engels” te zijn; verstaanbaar Engels dat door de meeste mensen begrepen wordt is vaak al voldoende. Maar als je je persoonlijke beste wilt bereiken – het CEFR C2-niveau van geavanceerd near-native Engels – wees dan voorzichtig met overmatig perfectionisme. Zelfs native speakers spreken niet altijd perfect. Om echt near-native te klinken, moet je vloeiend kunnen spreken en weten wanneer je woorden moet weglaten, verbinden of inkorten.

Networking events are like speed dating. In a Business English Speaking Course you can practice how to navigate the phases and phrases of these rapid-fire networking “dates.” These little social encounters mean navigating a brief contact with a stranger and then gracefully moving onto the next. And the next. For most of us, it’s not easy.
In fact, it’s just not a very natural way to interact with people. But as you practice, you will become more fluent, not just in your English, but in this very particular sort of social situation – the dreaded networking event!
And please remember, networking is a “numbers game.” In a room full of strangers, you will “size up” your prey 😉 – the person(s) you want to encounter – navigate the encounter – and then move on – because more encounters means more chances of meaningful business contacts. And you’ll do all this while speaking English and looking cool, calm and confident, right? Right!
1. Know your phrases and your elevator pitch: Practice the functional English for the phrases for networking (see below) as well as your elevator pitch (aka elevator speech). Practice these at home, with a friend or colleague, until you can say them with ease and confidence.

2. Know the culture(s) you are diving into. Cultural orientation is especially important when you will be networking with just one cultural group. Learn the basics of polite but engaging business socialization as defined by that group.
Intercultural tip! When you receive a business card from a Japanese person, take it with both your hands and look at it before you put it away. And never, never put that business card in your back trousers pocket. That is an insult.
3. Read the room (=look around) and identify your prey (your first contact). Then approach with a smile. If you’re nervous, you might want to avoid starting with the person you most want to meet, practicing with some other people first. Hopefully, by the time you get to the high value person you really want to meet, you are all warmed up and feeling comfortable and confident.
4. To shake or not to shake (?) and personal space: Use your emotional intelligence and cultural knowledge to know if you should shake hands, as well as how close to stand to someone. A few years ago, during Covid, we knew to stand back and never shake hands, but now we’re back to relying on our cultural knowledge and social cues.
5. Mind your body language and eye contact: Norms for these meta communication elements vary widely from culture to culture. In most western cultures eye contact can be pretty direct and “talking with your hands” is fine. But eastern cultures may call for a more reserved approach. Just prepare, observe and be more of a follower than a leader. In particular, be aware of any nervous habits you may have. If you are a hair twister or nail biter, try to suppress that during these encounters.
Also be aware that pointing is considered rude in many cultures. If you need to point something out, such as the bar or the exit, use your whole hand (all fingers together) to “point” the way.
6. Project both confidence and a little vulnerability: Almost everyone is a bit anxious in these situations, but it is attractive to project confidence, and it can help put the other person at ease, as long as it is mixed with a little empathy or vulnerability. Be confident but never cocky (=arrogant). Sometimes just admitting that you are a bit uncomfortable meeting new people can be a great icebreaker.
7. Mind your speed and volume: When we are nervous, our heart rates speed up, and with that biological marker going faster than usual, we may also speak more quickly than usual. Combine that with a noisy room where many people are speaking, often with various accents, speed can be a real obstacle to understandability. Plus speed can project nervousness! So slow down. It will be better for your English, plus better for the listener. Also be aware of your volume. The right volume promotes understandability. No whispering, and no shouting. Practise finding the sweet spot and stick to it.
8. Engage on suitable topics with prepared phrases: Once you have broken the ice, you need to have some appropriate topics “on the tip of your tongue” (=very accessible / top of mind). See our suggestions below.
9. Choose a register. Register is a social construct describing levels of formality. We generally think of levels of formality: informal, neutral and formal. In many cases, the middle register will be the right one. Thus, neither “Hey what’s up dude?” OR “Good afternoon, honorable madam” will be as good as the middle, neutral register greeting, “Hi. I’m Eva Suchard. It’s nice to meet you.” Exceptions are, of course, appropriate when meeting rap stars, royals, and other dignitaries.
10. Mind the time: As we said, event networking is a bit of a numbers game. Try to have meaningful but brief encounters so that you can move on to the next target. Resist the temptation to just “hangout” with someone you feel comfortable with, while the time is slipping away. Be like a shark and keep swimming. Use the phrases in the next section to prepare to politely disengage.
11. But before you go, firm up the connection with a business card (do people still have those?) or mobile number and/or email exchange. I like to just open my contacts and hand someone my phone so they can enter their own details. Then I add a keyword after their last name so that I can find it later. For example, if I am at the “Toy Fair” in New York, I add toy2024. Then I can find all those contacts later and organize them however I want. Other people may just follow each other on LinkedIn, but whatever you choose, do it “on the spot.” (=immediately, without delay.)
12. Finally, close with a smile, (card or mobile contact secured), and move on.
13. And as we say in English, “Rinse and repeat.” (= a funny way to say, “do it again.”)
When we socialize in our second language, social anxiety may be high, and anxiety can interfere with your ability to access your second language. That phenomenon is called the “affective filter,” and that’s why preparing some useful social phrases is so important. You will need to practice saying them in order to make them part of your “productive vocabulary” – that’s vocabulary that you can “send,” not just “receive.” In other words, you can spontaneously produce language that is in your productive vocabulary, not just understand it when you hear it. Arriving in Amsterdam from Argentina in October 2023 filled me with excitement and determination to build a new life, which also meant securing employment in the Netherlands. Fortunately, for myself and other expats undergoing a similar journey, there’s good news: according to World Bank data, the unemployment rate in the Netherlands has been declining since 2014 (from 7.4% to 3.5% in 2023), which is quite exciting.
However, I’d like to encourage you to arm yourself with patience. Job search in the Netherlands can vary depending on the industry and the timing of your arrival. From my own experience and discussions with other expats, it could take from 3 to 6 months, depending on when you start your search. Yes, job hunting also has its seasons! Particularly in the last quarter of the year, companies are focused on closing their fiscal year, meeting budget goals, and preparing for year-end vacations, which can affect hiring.
With the aim of helping you minimize this time frame; I’ve decided to share the tips that aided me in securing employment at a multinational company in Amsterdam – within 4 months.
Before delving into my recommendations, it’s important to understand that there are two types of work you need to undertake during this process: strategic, long-term internal work, and tactical, hands-on tasks. The first four tips I’ll provide are what I consider to be the pillars of your search and may take days or even weeks to address, but I promise, they are priceless.
Goals: Before diving into your job search in the Netherlands, I strongly recommend taking the time to review your goals. Are you looking to continue your career path? Do you aim to break into a specific industry? Are you open to starting fresh and being flexible? What sort of company would you like to work in? I understand it’s not easy, and you may feel like you have fewer options or less negotiating power. Nevertheless, having a clear framework will help you stay focused and avoid wasting your valuable time sending applications to the wrong places or for positions that won’t align with your objectives.
Values: Once you’ve clarified your goals, you may wonder how to recognize opportunities that truly match your aspirations. The answer lies in your values. These serve as your personal filters, guiding you in choosing which opportunities align with your principles. Ask yourself, “What values matter most to me?” I suggest listing a maximum of five values such as autonomy, trust, work-life balance, stability, continuous learning, etc. Keep these in mind for your future interviews to ensure alignment with prospective employers. Personally, this acted as a compass, helping me accept the job I have today and discard recruitment processes I knew wouldn’t benefit me in the long run.
Coaching: For those who are unclear about the previous points or struggling to connect with their goals and values, coaching can be immensely helpful. In the Netherlands, Empower Amsterdam is a great resource, providing free coaching to expatriates in need of employment assistance. Note: Be aware that there may be a lengthy waiting list due to high demand, but there’s plenty of content on YouTube or other social media platforms to help in the meantime.

Journaling: Whether it’s a notebook or an Excel sheet, find a method that works best for you to document your journey. Record insights from interviews, areas for improvement, your goals, salary ranges you expect, etc. The idea is to have a repository of information to refer back to, saving you from scrambling at the last minute.
Now that I’ve shared the long-term tips, let’s dive into actionable steps:
While certain sections of your CV remain fixed, others can be tailored to each position you apply for. Recognize that companies have different priorities, even for similar roles in different organizations. Creating a template on platforms like Canvas for design and ChatGPT for content proved helpful for me.
Treat your job search as your new job to maintain a sense of structure. Being “online” during peak recruiter hours increases your visibility and ensures you’re up to date with new job postings.
Keep your LinkedIn and Indeed profiles active and updated, and learn to optimize their use. Utilize filters to avoid wasting time on outdated job listings. Language filters are especially crucial for English speakers. Explore articles or videos for tips on maximizing these platforms.
Agencies like Iamexpat or Adam Recruitment cater specifically to inmigrants. Set up job alerts to stay informed about new opportunities. Don’t hesitate to reach out directly to recruiters; it can significantly boost your visibility.
Join WhatsApp or Facebook groups related to your field or nationality. Craft a message detailing your skills and job search in the Netherlands goals to share within these communities. Networking with professionals in your desired field can lead to valuable insights and connections.
Write down and rehearse responses to common interview questions, including your previous experiences, successes, motivations, and salary expectations. Don’t forget to prepare questions of your own to distinguish yourself and address any concerns.
Proper job searching in the Netherlands also includes including platforms like Glassdoor to measure whether your salary expectations align with market averages. Be clear about your availability, preferred work hours, and willingness to relocate if necessary.
Consider learning the language as it can significantly enhance your job prospects, even if you’re not fluent. Demonstrating an interest in integrating into Dutch culture and continuing to learn reflects positively on you. Moreover, many companies require Dutch proficiency for higher-level positions, making it a valuable asset for career growth.
