English Courses in the Netherlands

Private English courses for adults — weekly or intensive

People come to English training for many different reasons. You may need English for work, daily life in the Netherlands, an exam, a job interview, or simply because you want to speak more fluently and confidently.

Some learners need to build their English. Others already know quite a lot of English but find it difficult to use that knowledge quickly, naturally, and confidently.

You may hesitate when speaking, struggle to find the right words, feel uncertain about grammar or pronunciation, or find that your spoken English doesn't reflect what you actually know.

Progress can mean learning more English, but it can also mean becoming faster, more accurate, and more confident with the English you already have.

At The English Center, we provide fully customized private English courses in the Netherlands, with training in Amsterdam, Amstelveen, The Hague, Hoofddorp, online, and in-company.

You can study at a regular weekly pace or choose a private intensive English course when you want to make faster progress in a shorter period.

Your course is built around your level, goals, interests, and real-world needs — whether you need English for professional, academic, social, or everyday situations.

Your intake appointment is with a trainer, not a salesperson.

Why English can still feel difficult

You may understand English well but still find it difficult to use spontaneously.

You might:

  • hesitate or search for words when speaking
  • translate in your head
  • struggle with fast speakers or unfamiliar accents
  • know grammar rules but not use them automatically
  • feel that your spoken English does not reflect your actual level

These challenges are not simply about English level. Often, the gap is between knowing English and being able to use it easily in real time.

Good English training helps you build your language skills while also developing the fluency, confidence, and automaticity to use what you know through guided practice, useful feedback, and repeated experience using English in realistic situations.

The skills that make English easier to use

Strong English communication — even at an advanced level — depends on several connected skills. Your course may focus on one area or combine several, depending on your level, goals, and the situations in which you use English.

Spoken fluency

Fluency is the ability to keep speaking, connect your ideas, find words quickly, and recover when you get stuck. At more advanced levels, it can also mean expressing complex ideas clearly and confidently, especially in demanding or high-stakes situations.

Clear pronunciation

Pronunciation includes individual sounds as well as rhythm, stress, intonation, and pausing. These elements affect not only intelligibility, but also how confident, engaged, and authoritative you sound.

The goal is not to remove your accent, but to help you speak clearly, naturally, and comfortably.

Listening

Real spoken English can be fast and unpredictable. We can work on understanding different accents and speaking styles, following conversations more easily, and using natural strategies when you need someone to repeat or clarify something.

Vocabulary

You need vocabulary that is useful for your life, work, and goals — and enough range and precision to express what you really mean.

Training can help you expand your vocabulary and become faster at retrieving and using words you already know.

Grammar

Grammar matters, but knowing a rule is different from being able to use it automatically. We work on the grammar that is relevant to you and practice it in realistic communication.

Reading and writing

Your course can also include reading and writing when these skills matter to your goals, whether you want to read more fluently, prepare for study, or write more clearly and accurately.

English training tailored to your goals

English develops through use. Explanation matters, but lasting progress comes from guided practice, timely feedback, and repetition.

At The English Center, your private training is built around your level, goals, interests, and real-life situations. You spend your sessions actively using English while your trainer listens closely, identifies what will make the biggest difference, and adapts the training as you progress.

Feedback is highly individual. It may focus on language, pronunciation, fluency, and listening or, for more advanced learners, on precision, tone, clarity, presence, and impact.

Over time, useful language becomes easier to retrieve, grammar becomes more automatic, pronunciation becomes clearer, and speaking requires less conscious effort.

Whether your goal is everyday English, an exam, a new job, or stronger communication as a manager or leader, your training is built around what you need to do in English.

Frequently asked questions about English courses in the Netherlands

What English courses do you offer?

We offer fully customized private English courses, including Intensive English, English Speaking, English Writing, English Exam Preparation, and focused short courses.

We also offer Business English training for professionals who use English at work.

What levels do you teach?

We work with learners at different levels, including advanced English speakers. Your course is adapted to your current English and what you want to achieve.

Some learners want to strengthen their overall English. Others already use English every day and want greater fluency, precision, confidence, or impact. At advanced levels, training may focus less on learning rules and more on natural expression, pronunciation, tone, clarity, and high-level communication.

Are your English courses private or in groups?

Most of our English courses are private and one-to-one, so your trainer can focus entirely on your level, goals, pace, and interests.

We also provide in-company group training for organizations.

How does an Intensive English Course work?

An Intensive English Course gives you concentrated private training over a short period. Your course is built around your level and goals and can combine speaking, listening, pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, reading, or writing.

Most intensive programs range from 10 to 50 hours. A 20-hour course over one week is a popular option, but your schedule can be adapted to your goals and availability.

Can I take an intensive English course for work or Business English?

Yes. Many learners choose an intensive course because they need to improve quickly for a new role, presentation, interview, meeting, or other professional situation.

If your main goal is professional communication, we can build your course around Business English, or you can choose our Intensive Business English Course.

How many hours can I take per day, and how long does an intensive course take?

Your schedule is customized around your goals, availability, and preferred pace.

Many intensive courses take place over approximately one to three weeks, depending on the number of training hours you choose. During your intake, we will help you find a schedule that is intensive enough to make good progress without becoming counterproductive.

How quickly can I start my English course?

Often quite quickly. The exact start date depends on your availability, preferred location or online format, and trainer availability.

If you need to start urgently, especially for an intensive or short course, tell us during your intake and we will look for the earliest practical start date.

What is the difference between an English Speaking Course and conversational English?

Our English Speaking Course can cover overall spoken communication, including fluency, pronunciation, vocabulary, listening, and confidence.

If you mainly want conversation practice, we can make conversational English the focus, with plenty of speaking and real-time feedback on the topics and situations that matter to you.

Can you help me prepare for IELTS, Cambridge, or TOEFL?

Yes. We offer targeted exam preparation for IELTS, Cambridge, TOEFL, and other English exams. Your program focuses on the specific exam you are preparing for and the areas in which you need the most support.

Do you offer online or hybrid English courses?

Yes. You can take private English training online via Zoom, Microsoft Teams, or Google Meet. You can also combine online and in-person lessons in a hybrid course.

How many hours of English training do I need?

That depends on your current level and what you want to achieve.

A very specific goal may only require a 6-hour short course. Broader goals involving fluency, pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, or professional communication usually benefit from a longer program.

During your free intake, your trainer will discuss your goals and recommend an appropriate number of hours.

Can my employer pay for my English course?

Yes. Many learners have their English training paid for by their employer as part of their professional development.

We can provide a formal quotation or proposal for your employer. The English Center is Cedeo recognized and CRKBO registered, and our language training is VAT-exempt in the Netherlands.

How much does an English course cost?

The cost depends mainly on the type of course and the number of training hours you choose.

We will give you a clear, no-obligation quotation before you book, so you know exactly what your course will cost.

Start your English course

Your first step is a free intake appointment with a trainer, not a salesperson.

Together, you’ll discuss your current English, what you want to achieve, where you are getting stuck, and which type of training — weekly, intensive, or more focused — is likely to suit you best.

There is no obligation.
